SAN GIO’ UNDICI ANNI IN CAMPO
Un grazie sincero anche quest’anno agli organizzatori del San
Giò video festival che cresce a vista d’occhio nella varietà di
proposte e nei rapporti internazionali.
Mi auguro che sia un contributo interessante per tutti gli appassionati
del genere, particolarmente i giovani, perché crescano e
si rendano più visibili le produzioni locali. Alcune iniziative
che vanno in questo senso sono già state prese con un successo
incoraggiante, come è accaduto per il recente bando/concorso
fatto dal Comune di Verona e dalle iniziative formative svolte
con alcuni comuni della cintura.
Il San Giò può darci una mano per vedere cosa succede soprattutto
fuori delle nostre mura. Una finestra importante per confrontare
esperienze e risultati e per creare contatti indispensabili.

San Giò Festival anno undicesimo, un traguardo importante,
coronato da un grosso successo internazionale, basti vedere le
nazioni presenti, una ventina, tra cui anche paesi di solito
assenti nei grandi circuiti, penso all’Armenia, al Kurdistan,
alla Colombia. Abbiamo avuto la conferma che il mondo che
crea immagini in movimento senza usare la pellicola, affidandosi
a mezzi economicamente meno costosi, ma tecnicamente
più giovani ed evoluti, che questo mondo sa affrontare temi di
attualità così spinosi che nè cinema nè televisione hanno il
pari coraggio di affrontare. Platone con il mito della caverna
apriva le strade al mondo che voleva raccontare con le immagini
in movimento, oltre duemila anni dopo giovani di tutti i
paesi sanno che per dire liberamente le loro idee non devono
passare dalla censura degli studios cinematografici e televisivi,
devono essere nuovi artigiani, nuovi poeti, di una poesia
dove cuore non fa più rima con amore, ma con le bombe che
esplodono, con la fatica di essere donne, con la libertà che non
è un kleenex da usare e gettare al bisogno, con i confini che
sono un peso e non una sicurezza, con un’identita sessuale che
cerca strade nuove rispetto a quelle di una civiltà morente che
si affida a credi religiosi vecchi di millenni invece di affrontare
sul campo il senso dei problemi di oggi. Il San Giò respira
il disagio di questo nostro mondo ed anche la sua allegria,
scopre i giovani che vogliono raccontare fiabe alla loro
maniera dove il lieto fine non è un obbligo e qualche volta è
solo un’illusione. Dall’Italia sono arrivati molti documentari
importanti dicono della poesia che in questo Paese è morta
con Piero Ciampi, dicono delle madri e delle figlie, perchè
solo loro tentano ancora di costruire un qualche futuro, dicono
dei giovani in carcere, dicono di Dio, bell’argomento,
grande, anche senza il catechismo, anche senza le chiese e le
moschee ed i templi orientali. Dal Belgio arriva una riflessione
che in Italia non si può fare: perchè i comunisti, quei milioni
di comunisti che votavano PCI oggi fanno silenzio?
Rispondere a questa domanda vorrebbe dire rimettere, forse,
rimettere in moto l’Italia. Ma il San Giò è solo un piccolo
festival che arranca nel trovare i finanziamenti che sa di essere
scomodo per quello che dice attraverso le opere che presenta,
che non sono film che poi si ritrovano al cinema, ma
lacerti di un mondo vero, pulsante, reale, quello che da undici
anni dal 23 al 27 di luglio cerchiamo di mostrare. Grazie
all’Assessorato alle Politiche Giovanili, all’Assessore
Montagnoli, al suo toscano, e a tutti i suoi preziosi collaboratori.
Grazie all’Assessore ai Quartieri che ha instituito un premio
nuovo rivolto a chi sa guardare alle periferie, grazie
all’Agec che quest’anno ci ha aiutato a dare un nuovo premio,
alla Confesercenti che conferma il suo impegno nel sociale.
Grazie ai tanti operatori di Verona e Provincia che si sono
messi al nostro fianco così, solo perchè siamo simpatici nel
nostro essere un festival senza stelle e stelline, con tante storie
da raccontare e poco tempo per farlo.

I am happy and proud to be Ugo Brusaporco’ s right-hand man
once again for this year’s 11th. edition of the San Giò Video
Festival. This is our most international Festival yet, with entries
from some 20 different nations and a Jury of eminent film
experts not only from Italy, but also from Spain, the U.K., the
United States, and even China. Apart from what we consider to
be an excellent range of videos, I look forward to introducing
the members of the Jury to the delightful city of Verona and its
vinous and gastronomic pleasures, because San Giò also represents
an extraordinarily pleasurable opportunity for cultural
exchange.
The response to our appeal for videos was nothing short of
overwhelming this year and, in spite of severe pruning
(stealing an expression from my “day job”) I have no doubt that
on most of the five evenings, projection will go on beyond the
witching hour. We are sure, though, that the quality and variety
of the videos we have chosen will keep each night’s audience
glued to their seats.

Il documentario si basa su un’idea molto semplice e nello stesso
tempo abbastanza complessa: porre delle domande estremamente
dirette a un campione numeroso di persone circa il
proprio intimo rapporto con Dio, la spiritualità e la fede. Uno
degli interrogativi è: “Chi è Dio per te”. L’idea e l’esperimento
è quello di fotografare delle risposte immediate e più possibile
prive di sovrastrutture. Utilizzare il limite apparente di
un’intervista non annunciata per raggiungere brevi attimi di
verità e onestà. Le testimonianze sono integrate e alternate con
immagini decontestualizzate dei Sassi di Matera e delle chiese
rupestri della Murgia. Questi luoghi sono ritratti in modo quasi
destrutturato, surreale e onirico attraverso il viaggio simbolico
di un cane bianco.
The documentary is based on an idea which is both very simple,
but at the same time quite complex: it poses extremely
direct questions to a large and diverse group of people regarding
their own intimate relationships with God, spirituality, and
faith. One of the questions is, “Who is God for you?”. In this
case, the idea and the experiment are to demand nippy responses
that are immediate and devoid of superstructures. The
Directors utilize the apparent limits of an extemporaneous
interview as a means for reaching brief moments of truth and
sincerity. The testimonies are sewed with decont.
